Timothy Corrigan, award-winning interior designer and a member of the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½app Board of Directors, presents a new five-episode series about his eighteenth-century home in the French countryside, Château de la Chevallerie. Starting with the remarkable history of the estate, he reflects on the unique joys and challenges of how he faithfully renovated the house and its gardens, redecorated the interiors while still honoring their historical artisanship, and made the château suitable for life in the twenty-first century.
In this first episode, Timothy describes why the history of Chevallerie inspired him to restore the château and its grounds. Originally built in 1640 as a hunting lodge, the château was expanded in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and remained in the same family for generations. Its most illustrious occupant was the cartographer Jean-Baptiste d’Anville, who became the geographer to Louis XV. The estate comprises almost 100 acres of gardens, fields, a potager, and woods with multiple riding trails.
Francophiles are often surprised by how inexpensive it is to buy a château. But many prospective buyers do not realize that the cost of restoring one of these aging estates can often be much more than the original purchase price. In this second episode, Timothy details the monumental restoration work he led at Chevallerie, including re-wiring the entire building, retrofitting an air pump system, re-sanding the parquet de Versailles wood flooring on all three levels, and painstakingly stripping and painting the exquisite boiserie wood paneling.
In the third episode, Timothy walks through the gardens at Château de la Chevallerie and explains how he restored the plantings as well as the parklands and woods. Originally designed in the nineteenth century by Édouard André, who also designed the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, the gardens had been destroyed by boxwood blight and needed a fresh start. Timothy recounts how he added new paths, found new sculptures to replace the long-lost originals, and revived the gardens to create an enchanting experience for visitors.
Although it is important to respect the architectural heritage of a house, it is also essential to consider how people will live in it in the twenty-first century, and update the place accordingly. In the fourth episode of the series, Timothy describes how he converted some of the château's rooms to new uses, and offers tips for how to fully enjoy every space in your home, no matter when it was built.
In the fifth and final episode of the series, Timothy shares his approach to designing the interiors of the newly renovated château. From the grand entry hall, featuring a sweeping three-story staircase lined salon-style with artworks, to the striking custom paint colors and furnishings of the salons, the decor is at once happy and sophisticated, while still respectful of the château's rich history, allowing guests to relax and unwind in a house that has been described as the "Versailles of the fields."
