Join the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½app and renowned interior designer Michael Simon as he shares his journey from composer to interior designer. Simon reveals how his background in music composition informs his distinctive approach to interior design, where each project is shaped by its scope, location, and the mindset of its patrons—much like a musical composition.
Drawing from case studies and behind-the-scenes insights, Simon will illustrate how musical principles guide his creative process. He likens his use of distinct visual markers to leitmotifs in music, crafting a cohesive design language that resonates throughout a space. Each design decision—form, palette, and iconography—contributes to an overarching vision, ensuring interiors that embody harmony and timelessness.
Michael Simon is an acclaimed New York-based interior designer, furniture creator, and collector who originally trained as a composer. At fifteen, he studied privately with Stephen Sondheim for five years and later pursued classical music at Carnegie Mellon University and the Manhattan School of Music under John Corigliano.
In 1995, he established his own interior design firm, bringing a composer’s mindset to his work—emphasizing line, balance, harmony, rhythm, counterpoint, and orchestration in his interiors, a process he likens to "composing rooms." His projects span the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, and his work has been widely published in leading design publications.
Renowned for his expertise in the decorative arts, Simon frequently lectures at institutions such as The Society of the Four Arts, Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, and Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
He is also dedicated to historic preservation, serving on the Board of Edith Wharton’s The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts, and consulting on projects such as Manhattan’s Morris-Jumel Mansion.
