Hosted by the Ҵýapp Louisiana Chapter | 3 AIA CES Learning Units|HSW
Please join the Ҵýapp Louisiana Chapter for a walking tour of Historic Algiers Point in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Established in 1719, Algiers is considered the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans though it served many functions prior to becoming a “neighborhood”. Originally part of the “King’s Plantation”, Algiers Point served as a holding area for enslaved Africans waiting to be sold in New Orleans.
Situated along the Mississippi River and directly across from the Vieux Carré, Algiers Point developed as an independent town while maintaining a small-town atmosphere. With its 19th-century charm, the neighborhood features historic structures, including Greek Revival and Creole cottages. Algiers fosters a diverse community of artists and professionals attracted by its cultural richness and affordability. Many residents have deep roots in the area, with generations of family homes contributing to its unique character.
This 3-hour tour will begin with a welcome party and walkthrough of a c. 1857 Greek revival home where owners Chad Graci and Collin Magee discuss the challenges and successes of renovating and maintaining a historic home. After lunch, participants will be guided through Old Algiers by historian and preservationist Kristen Gisleson Palmer. Kristen will discuss the development of Algiers from its inception through today and illustrate the importance of traditional architecture and urbanism in fostering diverse, healthy, and resilient communities.
